Captain – Review

Movie Details

Science-fiction stories and Sakthi Soundararajan are like bread and jam. They always go together. Seemingly an extension of his urge to handle such a genre, he has come out with Captain.
Starring Arya in the lead, Captain is more a marriage of Aliens with Predator eventually ending up nowhere.

This Captain is no leader. Sadly ideas are right. But the execution is wrong. It involves the audience nowhere. The captain is written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan and is produced by Think Studios in association with actor Arya’s The Show People. Apart from Arya, the others in the star cast include Simran, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Harish Uthaman, Kavya Shetty, Gokul Anand, Suresh Menon, Bharath Raj, Ambuli Gokul, and a few more prominent actors.

Vijay Kumar (Arya) is an Indian Army Captain. He along with with his men goes to Sector 42 as per Government Order on a mission. Many who had been there died mysteriously. Vijay Kumar and his team take up the task. They confront a predator. Vijay and the team solve the mystery. This forms part of the rest of the movie.

Performance

Arya is bubbly and energetic as a military officer. He has enough action scenes to do. And there is little romance on screen.

Aishwarya Lakshmi plays the female lead but she goes missing in a couple of scenes to re-appear in the climax

Simran as a scientist does her part well. However, her role could have been written well.

Harish Uthaman, Gokul, and the rest have no big role. They come and go all through the film.

Plus

Arya’s dedication. He gets under the skin of the character to give his best

Imman’s BGM adds vigor to proceedings.

And the Climax underwater is good to watch

Minus

The story is old so old that we have seen more than dozen films in this genre

VFX and CG works are amateurish. A film on this scale needs more clarity of work

Writing should have been strong. A sci-fi film such as this should have an emotional connection with the masses. It goes for a toss.

Finally, a bit more seriousness and more coordinated efforts to translate his vision on screen. could have helped Sakthi Soundararajan’s cause

S Yuva’s cinematography is good while D Imman’s BGM is engaging. The captain could have been better had there been a tighter screenplay and good VFX works.

Captain Fails To Impress… It’s neither here nor there.
